SAFETY TIPS
Lock cars and homes: Please keep your vehicles and homes locked. This is a simple first line of defense and makes use of security features already in place. Keep some lights or a stereo or a television on when you leave your home at night.
Use home security systems: Activate and use your home security system, even when you are just out and about on the island. This is particularly important when you are away from home for any extended period. If you do not have a home security system, please consider having one installed.
Shielded outdoor, motion-activated lighting: Motion-activated outdoor lighting is a good way to discourage trespassers at night. Please bear in mind that the Town’s existing Dark Skies legislation prohibits unshielded exterior lighting. Please see the Town Code, Chapter 83 Lighting (https://ecode360.com/27711366) for regulations regarding exterior lighting.
Deploy security camera systems: Admittedly they are invasive but motion-triggered surveillance cameras can document all activity around your home, day or night. There are models which can be installed remotely, with power from a small solar panel which can deliver images to your phone or an email address
